What is an Exercise Physiologist (EP)?

Shae is an allied health professional with extensive training in understanding the body’s response to exercise. She is very knowledgeable about the human body and the physical and mental benefits that exercise has on it. Shae uses this knowledge to create an individualised, evidence-based clinical exercise intervention for people with a broad range of health issues to improve their functional capacity, movement performance and quality of life.

During an appointment with Shae, you can expect:

  • assessments of your functional capacity
  • health education on management strategies for your particular circumstance, lifestyle modifications to improve your health status, and much more
  • tailored exercise prescription for strength and function improvement
  • supervised exercise during your appointment to ensure correct movement technique with exercise modification as required
  • an individualised exercise program for you to complete at home between appointments.

What is the difference between a Physiotherapist and an EP?

The most successful treatment options for patients will see the two professions working together, hence Mittagong Physio and Pilates bringing onboard an EP.

Physiotherapists are trained to focus on diagnosis, assessment and treatment of acute injuries with a focus on reducing symptoms. Physios excel at the initial treatment of injuries and getting your body ready for movement.

EPs focus on increasing functional capacities and quality of life over a longer period of time using exercise. When it comes to the prescription of exercise, EPs are the most qualified professionals in Australia. The right selection of exercises strengthens the body to return you to your pre-injury capacity and prevents the injury from reoccurring.

How do I pay for my EP appointment?

Exercise Physiology services are covered by the following schemes: most private health insurances, Medicare, NDIS, Workcover, DVA, and CTP. A gap payment may be applicable on Medicare and private health insurance claims.
